REVIEW: THE WORST NIRVANA COVER IN THE WORLD, PERFORMED BY PUDDLE OF MUDD

Just when you thought 2020 couldn't get any worse, eh?

Alright, superfans – I realise I'm a little late to the roasting curb on this one, seeing as this trainwreck happened way back in January. But, although a little late to the party, I feel as if this monstrosity can't simply skate on by without hearing our two pence first. You know – for whatever that's worth.

ALRIGHT, LET'S BOARD THIS TRAIN.

Puddle of Mudd flew back on to the scene in 2019 after a decade away from the studio. With their fifth revival album 'Welcome To Galvania', fans around the globe were quick to jump back in to get their boots dirty. However, only a few shorts months later, lead singer, Wes Scantlin, and his band of perplexed troops, appeared for a live recording session on SiriusXM.

NOW, THAT'S WHERE SHIT WENT DOWNHILL.

Although known as a post-grunge band, Puddle of Mudd were a little ambitious when it came to re-creating Nirvana's "About A Girl" track. Not only because Kurt Cobain's original vocals are a little difficult to imitate, but because Wes Scantlin himself made the ludicrous decision to try and physically burn through Cobain's style, as well.

At first, you get a nice feel for the classic anthem. But, approximately SEVENTEEN seconds in, you start questioning everything, and the red in your cheeks suddenly burns from embarrassment.

With a horrendous imitation of Cobain's vocals, Scantlin proceeds to crash straight through the three-minute track with what can only be described as "toddler rage", resulting in some of the most cringeworthy minutes of your life.

As Scantlin strums away and cycles through a flipbook of angry emojis, he takes on the form of a man with explosive diharrea. That's really all I can say on this, to be fair. It's something nobody was expecting – but something nobody seems to stop talking about, either.

HECK – EVEN THE BAND BOWED THEIR HEADS IN SHAME.

Yeah, that's right. During several intervals away from the cherry-faced singer, band members can been seen hiding a smile or dipping their heads in embarrassment. Even the bongo player, who of all people should be merrily patting away – even HE looks ashamed to be stapled to the band.

After the cover went viral for all the wrong reasons, SiriusXM literally stripped the video from their YouTube page. That's right – they literally tried to banish it in the hope nobody would ever see it again.

BUT THIS IS THE INTERNET, PEOPLE. THERE WILL ALWAYS BE A COPY.

Funnily enough, it didn't take long for various YouTubers to start plastering the cover left, right and centre all over again, which, of course, resulted in a second wave of abuse from listeners.

See, that's the thing with the internet; you can practically hide a skidmark, but it's impossible to remove a shit-stain. That'll always surface, guys.

But, being lovers of music, we wouldn't usually staple such a harsh critique on a song; especially one performed by, despite recent works, a band that has enjoyed a very successful career with chart-topping hits. But that's not the point here. The point is, that, despite the dreadful response, Scantlin STILL took to social media to try and argue that this was actually a good performance.

Yeah – in his own mind, "About A Girl" was essentially pitch-perfect compared to the great Kurt Cobain, and even goes as far as to saying he's "at his best now." But, fans of the band might disagree on that one. We all know there are better performances out there, and that this live session should simply be put down as a bump on what is essentially a steady road ahead. But, the fact that Scantlin powers on and denies the criticism just proves that he's in serious denial.

SHOULD SOMEONE TELL HIM, OR?

So, there you have it: Puddle of Mudd and their infamous shit-stain cover of "About A Girl" by Nirvana. We hope you enjoy the butchered cover just as much as the rest of us. There's no going back now, guys.

Puddle of Mudd – may 2021 be a better year than this one. And, next time you slaughter a classic – just bloody own up to it and move on.
