From wannabe gangbanger to mighty superhero
Well, if you didn't feel old already — you're sure as shit about to now. That's because today is the day that Saints Row turns fourteen years old. That's right — bloody fourteen. And here I was still thinking the first release of the gangbanging, madhouse, wannabe Grant Theft Auto clone had only dropped a few years ago.
JUST GOES TO SHOW HOW OLD WE'RE GETTING, EH?
Volition released the wannabe thug simulator on August 29th 2006 on the Xbox 360. And, since then, has gone on to release three further main titles, as well as a couple of spinoffs.
There's no denying that Saints Row has enjoyed a rather favourable reception sine its debut launch fourteen years back. And, I think it's fair to say that we've been treated to some rather insane antics since the series made a rather abrupt transition post-Saints Row 2.
What was once a subtle contender to the iconic Grand Theft Auto franchise, eventually dropped out of the thug bandwagon and steered more towards ridiculous and wacky storytelling. And, we can all probably agree that if the shift wasn't made all those years ago — we probably would've seen the Saints franchise crumble beneath the empire that is Rockstar's baby.
Saints Row has provided us with enough tears, laughter, joy, and even the odd challenge here and there — to honestly last us an entire generation of 360 gaming. And, we hope the ballsy developers continue to burn high and pack an even harder punch with future titles, too.
We aren't ready to let the Saints die yet.
Here's a bit of nostalgia in case you fancied it.
Probably a smart move changing the Saints gang colours to purple, huh? That could've been a nasty lawsuit waiting to happen.
G̶R̶O̶V̶E̶ ̶S̶T̶R̶E̶E̶T̶ THIRD STREET SAINTS
Keep it coming, guys. And congratulations on hitting fourteen years of utter madness.
